Description

Recording of Webinar 4 of “Access the Experts”

“Access the Experts with Rachel Arthur” is a webinar series focusing on the best of Mental Health Education.  Rachel interviews four hand-picked guest speakers about a particular area of expertise in Mental Health. Each is a clinician with years of experience (from a psychologist to a GP to psychiatrists) who Rachel has worked with and/or been mentored by and she is thrilled that these interviews create an avenue to share their incredible & very practical knowledge with a wider audience.

Dr Azita Moradi – Consultant Psychiatrist, MBBS, MPM, FRANZCP

“Solving the riddle of behavioural change in our patients: How to use neuroscience to help our clients change unhealthy behaviours & habits when it’s most difficult to do”

Over the 12 years that Azita has worked as a psychiatrist in both public & private settings she has increasingly recognised that whatever the prescription, be it pharmaceutical or nutritional, it’s just the bare beginning for patients faced with mental health conditions.

Azita is a strong advocate for the need to educate, inspire and empower our clients to make positive changes in their life regarding their health and in this insightful session talks about the barriers we can face as clinicians and the most effective ways to overcome these. Many would argue that during any mental health training for clinicians there is an over-emphasis on the ‘What’ and not enough said about the ‘How’.

We are all aware of the impressive research around exercise as an intervention for depression for example, but how do you get your severely depressed patients who struggle just to get through the day to engage in exercise as well?

This webinar is all about the ‘How’. Azita reminds us that just as in other settings, if we give a man a fish he eats today but if we teach a man to fish we feed him for life.  Hand and in hand with this we need to have a strong understanding and appreciation of how to engage clients in making positive changes to their lives, when it seems most difficult to do.

In this interview, Rachel will be asking Azita about:

  • What are the practical steps towards effective behavioural change?
  • How can we achieve this positive change in all patients, but also patients presenting specifically with mental health issues?
  • How does this tie in with the science of neuroplasticity?

This is an interview not to be missed, taking us beyond the prescription and into probably the most powerful role we can have as a clinician.

“The first time I heard Azita speak we were sharing a stage at a medical conference and I was absolutely struck by her approach as a psychiatrist who truly values addressing all aspects of the individual from the physical to the spiritual and all that lies between.” Rachel Arthur
